Mohamad Elmasry, professor in the media studies programme at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, has told Al Jazeera that it is “unprecedented” that such a senior official would call “rules of engagement stupid”.
“There is a clear signal that the United States is not interested in playing by the rules”, with the US president promising “what amounts to war crimes”, as he threatens to hit civilian infrastructure.
“All of this comes in the context of five weeks of bombardment, during which the United States and Israel have hit hundreds of hospitals, they’ve hit tens of schools, they’ve hit thousands of residential homes, so I think there is a real fear that they’ve been committing war crimes along with Israel, but that they’re going to intensify their bombardment in a kind of Israel-ification of the war,” Elmasry said.
